Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams filed four trademark applications on Aug. 5, and the news of his applications became public on Thursday, just one week after his breakout performance.

Williams’ four applications include a trademark on his name, a trademark on the Superman logo with his initials, another logo using his initials and his silhouette. He is expected to use the four trademarks, if accepted, for Name, Image and Likeness deals or apparel (NIL).

Williams had himself a game to remember on Saturday, as he stepped in for the preseason Heisman Trophy-favorite Spencer Rattler and led Oklahoma to a victory over Big 12 rival Texas.

The storied rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma lived up to the hype and some, as the Sooners won in a shootout, 55-48, with Williams playing the role of a superhero. He willed the Sooners to a come-from-behind victory in the Red River Showdown while replacing Rattler.

Williams was first put into the game for Rattler early in the second quarter as a change-of-pace option under center, and he proceeded to run for a 66-yard rushing touchdown, sparking the Oklahoma offense while trailing 28-7.

Rattler — who was benched in last year’s Red River Showdown, too — came back into the game on the very next drive, but Oklahoma faltered. On the sixth play of the drive, Rattler fumbled the ball and set up another Texas touchdown, which ended up being his last drive of the day. He finished with just eight of 15 pass completions for 111 passing yards, no touchdowns, an interception and a fumble. Months ago, before the college football season even began, Rattler was seen as the consensus favorite to win the Heisman. The former five-star recruit from Phoenix was excellent for Oklahoma in his redshirt freshman year, but after struggling this season, he was replaced by Williams.

Williams, taking over in Rattler’s absence, looked the part of an Oklahoma quarterback. Using both his speed and talented arm, Williams led the Sooners to yet another victory — their sixth of the season — and kept Oklahoma’s undefeated record in tact.

He finished 16-of-25 passing for 212 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Moreover, the speedy quarterback added 88 rushing yards on just four carries, including the long, 66-yard touchdown run, helping the Oklahoma Sooners stay undefeated for at least one more week.

Williams was the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the country, ranked a five-star recruit by all recruiting platforms. He was not able to play his last season of high school due to COVID-19, but in his junior year he threw for 1,770 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior, while rushing for 838 yards and 18 scores.
