Dayton (Ohio) Centerville four-star safety Reggie Powers has been committed to Michigan State since June. But after the firing of Spartans head coach Mel Tucker earlier this week, teams are beginning to circle the On300 prospect in hopes of flipping him.

UCLA extended Powers an offer on Monday, and on Thursday night, Oklahoma became the latest program to join the fray.

The Sooners have a top-10 class in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and a pair of safety commits already, but are looking to build even more depth in the secondary this cycle.

Powers is the No. 358 overall prospect and No. 35 safety in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3, however, ranks him significantly higher than other industry recruiting services. In the most recent On300 rankings, he was tabbed as the nation’s No. 210 prospect and No. 21 safety and was one of the biggest risers in the entire country.

Reggie Powers has always been an enforcer in the run game,” On3 Scouting and Rankings assistant Cody Bellaire said. “His ability to trigger and play downhill is textbook for the safety position. And as a senior, he has added another tool to his bag; center fielder. He has displayed the range and long speed necessary in order to thrive as a middle of the field safety at the next level. If Powers can maintain consistency in developing his skillset in the back half and continue playing with discipline around the box, he will be a dominant three-down weapon in the secondary.

Sooners are hot on the recruiting trail

Brent Venables and Co. moved into the top 10 of the On3 Industry Football Team Recruiting Rankings earlier this month, and on Wednesday night, they made yet another big leap.

After landing four-star in-state EDGE Danny Okoye, the Sooners moved from No. 10 to No. 8 in the team rankings, leapfrogging Notre Dame and future SEC rival LSU in the process.

Okoye is the No. 144 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3 is significantly higher on him than other services though, tabbing him as the nation’s No. 66 overall prospect and No. 8 EDGE in the latest On300 rankings.

Okoye marks the sixth commitment since August 1 for the Sooners, a list that also includes Five-Star Plus+ defensive lineman David Stone and top-150 prospect Nigel Smith II.
