Mike Gundy on Oklahoma State QB situation: 'Not anything to talk about that would make it different'

Oklahoma State has played three games this season and has played three quarterbacks in all three. That system isn’t changing either based on the update that Mike Gundy provided on Monday.

Gundy addressed the quarterback position right away during the opening statement of his press conference to start the week. He said that they’re going to continue to move forward as they have and that, for now, there isn’t anything new to share about how they’re handling snaps at that spot.

“Quarterback-wise? We’re rotating, moving along as we have,” Gundy said. “I’m trying to save you as many questions as possible there. There’s not really anything to talk about that would make it different.”

Alan Bowman, Gunnar Gundy, and Garret Rangel are the three quarterbacks who are currently seeing action in Stillwater.

Bowman is a sixth-year senior who has made the last two starts for Oklahoma State. After five years at Texas Tech and Michigan, he leads the way in total completions so far with 30-52 passing. However, his completion rate of 57.7% is last among the three. He is the only one without a touchdown and one of two who have thrown an interception so far.

Gundy, a walk-on and the son of the head coach, comes next. He is the only one who has yet to make a start but has arguably had the best start with the highest completion rate of 61.8%. With 202 yards to his name, he also has one touchdown to go with being the one quarterback who hasn’t thrown a pick through three games.

Finally, Rangel, a former four-star quarterback and current redshirt freshman, is the third and final option. He made the initial start for Oklahoma State this season in a win against Central Arkansas. While he has the most touchdowns with two, he has the fewest completions, attempts, and yards. He’s also second in percentage and tied for last in interceptions.

None of their outings in the latest 33-7 loss to South Alabama made this decision any easier for Gundy. In total, they combined to go just 16/35 (45.7%) for only 114 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception from Bowman.

With three players still in the running, this is one of the bigger, if not the biggest, quarterback battles that’s still ongoing this season. Even so, Gundy hasn’t seen anything yet that has made him want to do anything differently when it comes to the position against Iowa State this weekend.
