Mike Bianco has been the Ole Miss head coach for nearly two decades and finally completed his ultimate goal this summer. The Rebels not only made it to the College World Series for the second time in his tenure but finally won a national championship.

It had been a long time coming in Oxford, as the fan base finally got the college baseball title they desperately wanted.

To reward their head coach, Ole Miss has given Bianco a contract extension, keeping him as the program’s leader for another four seasons. Bianco is “ecstatic” to prolong his time with the Rebels but took some time to thank the fans for all the support over the years.

“I appreciate Keith, Chancellor Boyce and our Board of Trustees for proactively and aggressively getting this done,” Bianco said in a statement. “I am ecstatic about continuing to lead this incredible program with the support of a community that means so much to Camie and me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there is no better fan base in the country.

“We’ve always known that but after what you guys did in Omaha, the entire country knows it – Rebel fans showed up and made a difference! As always, none of this happens without the incredible players and coaches who have helped us build this program along the way. I can’t wait to see everyone back at Swayze next spring, and I am proud to be an Ole Miss Rebel.”

More on Mike Bianco, path to national championship

Bianco’s path to winning a national championship this season was not one the program was used to going through. Ole Miss has hosted countless Regionals and Super Regionals but this season, they were the final team in the NCAA Tournament. A trip to Coral Gables meant the Rebels had a steep uphill climb to Omaha.

The regional wound up being no problem, winning three consecutive games against Arizona and Miami. Ole Miss even breezed through the Super Regional against Southern Miss, winning the two games 10-0 and 5-0. A trip to the College World Series only marked the second under Bianco and a surprise to many.

SEC teams were prevalent on Ole Miss, with Arkansas and Auburn being the two opponents before the championship series. The Razorbacks nearly eliminated the Rebels but Bianco’s squad was able to pull through to the championship round. From there, it was a quick two-game set vs. Oklahoma, where Ole Miss was able to raise the trophy on a Sunday afternoon.
