On3 Consensus five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Banks has decommitted from the Oregon Ducks. The move comes after news that Mario Cristobal was leaving Eugene to take the Miami job.

“I would first like to thank the Oregon staff and community for everything they have done for me and my family,” Banks said. “I truly thank everyone for believing in my talents. But due to recent coaching changes, I will be decommitting from the University of Oregon. I am focused on doing what’s best for my future and family. Thank you.”

Kelvin Banks of Humble (Texas) Summer Creek made national headlines when spurned local schools Texas and Texas A&M to commit to the Ducks July 4. It was a shocking commitment because most assumed the Longhorns or Aggies would land the nation’s No. 14 overall player and top offensive tackle in the country.

There have been rumblings for weeks that Banks was having second thoughts about his commitment to the Ducks. Insiders told On3 that his family was pushing him to stay closer to home.

But even as recently as last week, Banks said he was still “solid” with his Oregon pledge.

“I’m solid with Oregon and (ready) to sign,” Banks told OregonLive last Thursday.

Banks took official visits to Oregon, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State this summer. He has returned to both Texas and Texas A&M for unofficial visits this fall.

Texas assistants Kyle Flood and Jeff Banks attended Summer Creek practice and had an in-home visit with Kelvin Banks last week. Different members of the Texas staff have had multiple communications with Banks and his circle for weeks now. The same is true with A&M.

The Aggies and Longhorns have pushed hard for the flip, but he remained steadfast with Oregon – until now.

Banks was the top overall player in Oregon’s class that has been in the top 10 for much of the lead up to the start of the early signing period.

Oregon’s 2022 recruiting class falls to No. 11 from No. 9 in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings after the decommitment of Banks.

Kelvin Banks scouting report

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power offered up this scouting report on five-star Kevlin Banks.

“An offensive tackle all the way. Has been dominant as a senior with improved physicality in the run game. Winning at point of attack and at the second level. Jolts defensive linemen with his initial punch, runs his feet and finishes in the run game. Also a high-end down blocker. Plays through the whistle. Body and reactionary quickness evident in pass protection. Has a quick pass set with a balanced base. Uses peripheral vision to quickly react to sudden movement. Has grown two inches to 6-foot-5 since 2019. Wingspan has increased from 81 to 83.5-inches in the same time.”
