As the college basketball coaching carousel starts to spin, one of the hottest names is Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry. He has been connected to the openings at Notre Dame and Georgetown as he gets the Nittany Lions ready for the NCAA Tournament, and it’s unclear if he’ll be back for a third year in Happy Valley.

Even he’s not sure, based on his comments ahead of March Madness.

When asked about whether or not he’ll be back, Shrewsberry went with “I don’t know” when a reporter asked if that question would fall under the “yes, no or I don’t know” category. That came after he gave a longer answer when directly asked if he’s going to be back at Penn State in 2023-24.

“That’s a great question,” Shrewsberry said, via statecollege.com’s Ben Jones. “There has been a lot of those. I got that question last week at the Big Ten Tournament. I told our guys after the Rutgers game that I felt like I let them down as a coach. I didn’t feel like I did my best. So, I told them that will never happen again. That’s all I’m focused on is being that person for them. Right?

“We’ve just played four games in four days. We have had our backs against the wall for three weeks and now, I’m getting ready to coach my first opportunity as a head coach to be in an NCAA Tournament game. I don’t have time to focus on anything else but just being the best version for these guys and that’s all I’m focused on. When the offseason comes, then I can focus on other things. But I’m tunnel-vision on playing this game for our guys tomorrow.”

Penn State was the No. 10 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the title game, where the Nittany Lions fell to Purdue — where Shrewsberry coached from 2011-13 and 2019-21. But before the game, ESPN’s Pete Thamel dropped Shrewsberry’s name as one to watch at Notre Dame, which is looking to replace Mike Brey.

“As for Notre Dame, don’t expect the Irish to make a hire soon,” Thamel said. “They have to wait out some targets who are going to be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Those include Penn State’s Micah Shrewsberry and Colgate’s Matt Langel. Shrewsberry’s an Indiana native who was actually the head coach at IU-South Bend in the mid-2000s. Other names to look at here: Ohio State’s Chris Holtmann, Langel of Colgate — the Patriot League champs — and Drake’s Darian DeVries.”
