4-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu commits to South Carolina
Upper Marlboro (Md.) Charles Herbert Flowers four-star EDGE Desmond Umeozulu has committed to South Carolina. The 6-foot-6, 239 pound prospect chose the Gamecocks over North Carolina, Ohio State and Pittsburgh.
Umeozulu is the No. 172 overall prospect and No. 25 EDGE in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 4 player in Maryland.
South Carolina’s 2023 recruiting class now contains 20 commitments and features 10 four-stars and 10 three-stars. With Umeozulu’s commitment, the Gamecocks now rank No. 16 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 7 in the SEC.

What Umeozulu means for South Carolina’s 2023 class
Umeozulu is currently the second EDGE committed to South Carolina. The other is Sumter (S.C.) four-star Monteque Rhames.
The Gamecocks have landed six commitments this month in Umeozulu, Macon (Ga.) Tattnall Square Academy four-star defensive lineman Zavion Hardy, Camden (S.C.) four-star defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha Catholic four-star offensive tackle Oluwatosin Babalade, Carrollton (Ga.) three-star athlete Vicari Swain and Perry (Fla.) Taylor County three-star safety Cameron Upshaw. Umeozulu, Hardy, McLeod and Babalade are all top-300 prospects.
Roebuck (S.C.) Dorman four-star interior offensive lineman Markee Anderson, the No. 139 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus, is the top player in South Carolina’s class. He is one of four in-state players to choose the Gamecocks.
Umeozulu has an On3 NIL Valuation of $16.4K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.

“Long-limbed edge rusher whose burst and length allow him to consistently terrorize offensive tackles on Friday nights. Solid hand usage. Rarely allows offensive lineman to get their hands on his chest. Quality bend and flexibility given his size. Measures in at a legitimate 6-foot-6, 200 pounds with a 6-foot-8 wingspan.
“Jumped an impressive 28.5-inch vertical and ran an electronically-timed 4.65 shuttle during the spring camp circuit prior to his senior season. Would like to see some development in his change of direction. Appears heavy-footed at times. High upside prospect due to size and functional athletic ability.”
