South Carolina is trying to get its secondary healthy following a game against Vanderbilt in which the Gamecocks were rotating players in and out virtually all game. Coach Shane Beamer provided Devonni Reed and Cam Smith injury updates on Tuesday afternoon.

Both played sparingly in the win over Vanderbilt but appear to be on track to play this weekend against Florida.

“They’re good. Cam’s a little sick right now, so health wise, physically he’s fine,” Beamer said. “He’s battling a little bit of stuff like a lot of people are, but he should be fine for Saturday. Then Devonni practiced today, as well, and was fine.”

Reed didn’t play until the game was well underway against the Commodores, dealing with both an upper- and lower-body injury. Beamer called the graduate student defensive back “beat to heck,” but the update Tuesday will certainly be encouraging for Gamecocks fans.

As far as Smith goes, he started against Vanderbilt before leaving the game following an dust-up with a Vanderbilt player. But he had been dealing with an illness prior to that, one that continues to linger into this week.

On the season, Reed has logged 34 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a loss, three quarterback hurries and a forced fumble. Smith has racked up 17 tackles, an interception, five pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.

Devonni Reed, Cam Smith injury updates not the only favorable ones for USC

In addition to the Devonni Reed and Cam Smith injury updates Beamer provided on Tuesday, he also shared some encouraging news on running back Marshawn Lloyd over the weekend.

Lloyd missed the team’s game against Vanderbilt with a bone bruise. But he could return against the Gators.

“That bruise is pretty significant that he had on his leg,” Beamer said after the win over the ‘Dores. “When I met with you guys on Tuesday, we felt like he progressed, that he made some progress from Sunday to Tuesday. We felt like he had a chance to continue to make a little more progress on Wednesday and Thursday, to play today. He just, on Wednesday, didn’t feel as good as we were anticipating he might.

“We’re optimistic. He told me earlier this week he was going to play tonight, but obviously, it didn’t get done. Anticipate him being back next week.”

Florida and South Carolina will kick off Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
