Frank Beamer is a legendary head coach. Now, his son Shane Beamer gets his first crack at being a college football head coach with South Carolina.

Frank Beamer is proud of what Shane has done already at South Carolina

Frank was asked in a July 29th interview about what he has seen from Shane Beamer as South Carolina inches closer to the 2021 season.

“I’m very proud of him,” said Frank. “Me and his mother, we just really enjoy hearing him speak, being on TV. I think he handles things very well. I look at him and I see a guy that’s way ahead of me, I think he’s done a really good job.”

Shane tweeted out a message in response to the words from his father.

“Thanks dad,” Shane said. “Not even close to being ‘way ahead’ though!”

Frank Beamer certainly knows what it takes to be a successful head coach at the NCAA level. Beamer coached for 29 years at Virginia Tech. He made 23 consecutive bowls from 1993 to 2015. His 23 bowl appearances rank as the sixth most all time. Beamer coached to a 238-121-2 career record, with his 238 career wins at Virginia Tech being the 11th most all time. Frank won ten different coach of the year awards in his career, including the AP Coach of the Year award in 1999 with the Hokies.

South Carolina will be Shane Beamer’s first stop as a head coach. Shane has had seven stops as an assistant since 2000. Most recently, Shane was an assistant head coach under Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. He was on the staff of the Sooners team that led the nation with 48.4 points and was the highest-scoring offense in 2018.

While Shane is unproven as a head coach, he undoubtedly has learned from someone who knows a thing or two about coaching. South Carolina is hoping that Beamer can ignite a program that has seen major struggles over the last two seasons.

South Carolina is not used to losing seasons. The Gamecocks were a national power as recently as 2017 when they went 9-4. They went 7-6 in 2018 but have fallen off significantly since then. After a 4-8 2019 record and a 2-8 2020 season, South Carolina parted ways with former head coach Will Muschamp.

Now it is time for Shane Beamer to right the ship. Steve Spurrier was the last Gamecocks head coach that has been able to have sustained success. Shane Beamer has all of the tools in front of him to do the same in time. He will have to build the program back up, which will take time. But South Carolina is hoping that Beamer is the right man to set its program in the right direction.
