Praise is showering South Carolina on Sunday after their national title win to finish undefeated on the season. It’s coming in from all corners, including now from Hollywood with Samuel L. Jackson.

Jackson tweeted at Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon following their 87-75 victory over Iowa in the national championship. He thanked her and her team while also referencing an in-state legend that he hopes is enjoying herself after that achievement.

“THANK YOU COACH DAWN!!!! THANK YOU SC BALLERS!!!!!” wrote Jackson amongst several emojis. “Ion know boutchall, but DAMN I needed that!!!!!! Somewhere I hope Pearl Moore is smiling.”

South Carolina got it done for the second time in the past four years in their fourth consecutive Final Four. They were able to win by a dozen over Hawkeyes, a fellow No. 1 seed and national sensation, because of several contributions from the roster as well as a defense from their team that stifled the runner-up

Amongst that production, Kamilla Cardoso, the Most Outstanding Player, went for a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double along with three blocks. Chloe Kitts went for a double-double as well with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It also included 19 points from Tessa Johnson, a stuffed state sheer from Milaysia Fulwiley, and three triples from Te-Hina Paopoa for 14 points.

Moore, who Jackson referenced in his tweet, is a native of South Carolina and a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. In her college career at Francis Marion in the AIAW, she scored a record amount of points with 4,061.

South Carolina earned this applause by accomplishing what only 10 other teams in the history of the sport have done. Jackson recognized that feat too with his message for Staley and her Gamecocks this evening.

Darius Rucker congratulates Staley, South Carolina

South Carolina native and country music star Darius Rucker sent his congratulations to Dawn Staley and the team on their national championship. The Gamecocks defeated Iowa to claim their second title in the past three seasons, finishing with an unblemished record.

Rucker took to Twitter moments after to take a victory lap and share his enthusiasm.

“What a GREAT season!!! ⁦@dawnstaley ⁦@GamecockWBB⁩!!!!!!!!! Do your thing!!!!!” Rucker wrote.

Rucker’s connection with South Carolina goes way back as he started his band “Hootie and the Blowfish” at the university in 1986. The band went on to have six songs that charted on the Billboard Top 100. Rucker later went on to a solo career.

His love for his home state is evident throughout his music. He even titled his third album Charleston, SC 1966 after the year and place he was born.
