Following South Carolina‘s victory over North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer famously took part in a mayo bath. That led to some harsh comments from CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd. Following Dodd’s comments, Beamer had a very strong response on Twitter.

Beamer joined The Paul Finebaum Show last week, where he opened up on what was behind his comments to Dodd.

“I did,” Beamer said when asked if he had to think about cracking back at Dodd for doubting him and South Carolina. “I sent that. We won the game and I was certainly excited about the win. Was driving back on Interstate 77 with my wife and children on the way back to Columbia and saw that tweet. And it wasn’t so much, I certainly added that to the end because of the expectations that a lot of people didn’t think we could accomplish this year. But more so, the whole reason for that tweet, Paul, was in my mind, it was diminishing what our kids accomplished.”

To Beamer, Dodd’s comments were “making light” of South Carolina’s bowl victory. That victory meant a lot to South Carolina, leading to the strong response from Beamer.

“The joy that I saw on that field after the game and the joy that team had in the locker room. I mean, to win seven games here at South Carolina after we hadn’t been to a bowl game in a few years, that was a big, big deal for South Carolina football,” Beamer added. “And a big, big deal for our football program and the players on our team. I know how excited they were about that win and I took that tweet of his to insinuate that he was making light of it, that bowl games aren’t good. People want to talk about there’s too many bowl games. All you had to do was watch our game and see the joy and passion that our players played with.”

Dodd was not a fan of Beamer’s mayo bath. In a since deleted tweet, Dodd slammed the entire postgame festivities from the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

“My God, we’ve reached the point where hyping a condiment being poured on an adult male passes for programming,” Dodd tweeted. “When we have the discussion about bowl relevance, I’ll start right here.”

Beamer’s response was a strong one.

“What’s it like being so miserable all the time?” Beamer tweeted. “For a sport you ‘cover’ @dennisdoddcbs… praying for you. I still remember back in July at SEC Media Days when you said the CEILING for our team was 2 wins… Keep bringing that expert ‘analysis.’ Happy New Year #FindSomeJoy”
