Dawn Staley, MiLaysia Fulwiley, Te-Hina Paopao review SEC Tournament Championship Game (March 10, 2024)

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley took to Twitter on Thursday to defend her star player Kamilla Cardoso after an “offensive” description of the center.

During a CBS Sports Minute segment on CBS Sports Radio, the broadcaster said that he is more excited for the women’s NCAA Tournament than the men’s tournament. However, he didn’t stop there.

“I’m ready for Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark and the giant Brazilian woman from South Carolina that knocks people over,” he said of Kamilla Cardoso during the segment.

Cardoso, who is from Brazil, was ejected from Sunday’s SEC Championship game win over LSU for shoving Tigers guard Flau’jae Johnson.

Dawn Staley was understandably not happy, and it didn’t take her long to come to the defense of the first-team All-SEC selection. Here’s what she had to say:

“What a morning?!! Never thought I’d hear one of my players described in such an offensive way. I’m not sitting this one out. Kamilla deserves an apology @CBSSports @1075thegame (can be issued even though it’s out of your control),” Staley posted.

She heard the segment on 107.5 FM The Game in Columbia, which is the local radio station for the Gamecocks and also plays national CBS Sports radio.

Dawn Staley later shared that an apology was issued by both 107.5, as well as CBS Sports.

“Thank you @1075thegame for the swift apology both written and on air! This means a great deal to Kamilla and myself as I do tune in daily.” she said. “And thank you @CBSSports execs for personally apologizing….accepted with love and understanding.”

Here is the apology that 107.5 The Game posted on Twitter:

“Coach you have every right to be upset. We as a CBS affiliate do not control what plays in their sports minutes and we certainly don’t condone what was said. We try and treat all women’s sports with the upmost respect. It’s unfortunate some national voices don’t,” 107.5 said. “Even though it was not one of our voices that said this, we are ultimately responsible for what plays on our airways and we will work to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again. We sincerely apologize to you, Kamilla and your entire team.”

The Gamecocks beat LSU on Sunday to clinch the SEC Tournament Championship and will enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated and as the No. 1 overall seed.
