South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer is heading into year two leading the program. And during a recent press conference interview, the South Carolina headmen reflected on last year’s offseason and compared it to this year’s, revealing the biggest differences between then and now.

“I think for me and then really for the team it’s having a better idea of what to of what to expect. Everything that we did last season and last year it was the first time doing it,” said Beamer.

With it being his first year as a Gamecocks head coach, he experienced things from a totally different point of view that came with a lot of firsts. And despite taking over a program in the rugged SEC, South Carolina had an impressive year under Beamer. The Gamecocks went 7-6 in 2021, including a 38-21 victory over rival North Carolina.

Heading into the 2022 season, with the first season in the books, Beamer believes there will be a better understanding between the players and coaches.

“… don’t get me wrong, every day is different … but our players have a better understanding of us as coaches and the way we expect things to be done. Me as a head coach personally, I have a better idea of our players and knowing them better. But also an idea of what to expect.

Overall, one could call South Carolina’s first year under Beamer a success. However, don’t expect any of them to rest on the results of last season. In fact, given the amount of action the Gamecocks had in the transfer portal this offseason, they are likely to improve their 3-5 conference record from last year.

To help South Carolina improve on their mark from the 2021 season, Beamer turned to the transfer portal to secure arguably the most critical position on the field quarterback. And he did just that when he landed former Heisman hopeful Spencer rattler from the Oklahoma Sooners. But South Carolina does have quite a few veteran players returning for 2022.

“We had some good leaders last year. But we’ve got a lot of older guys that are returning, and the steps they’ve taken to lead this football team have been impressive here in the last six-seven months since we came back after the bowl game.”

Fans will know the mettle of the Gamecocks early. After opening the at home against Georgia Southern, South Carolina will face Arkansas on the road followed by a home matchup against the defending college football champ the Georgia Bulldogs.
