The South Carolina spring game wasn’t just a big event for Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks football team. It was also a huge day for a couple that got engaged.

A man proposed to his girlfriend in the end zone on Saturday, before Beamer ran over to congratulate them. Beamer shared his reaction to the engagement during a press conference following the scrimmage.

“I just think it’s really cool that someone would do that,” Shane Beamer said. “I had no idea they were doing it. I was as surprised as anybody.”

Beamer didn’t want to steal the couple’s moment, but he did want to let them know that he was happy for them.

“I didn’t want to run out there and steal their moment, so I tried to just stand on the sideline and let them have their moment and say hello to them when they were done,” Beamer said. “But really all I said was just congratulations and how cool that was. But it was pretty cool.”

Beamer loves that the two care so much about South Carolina that they would get engaged at the Gamecocks spring game. Even though he didn’t attend South Carolina, Beamer has a ton of love for the University. Before he was the head coach there, he was an assistant with the Gamecocks.

“That’s what’s great about college athletics that he felt this would be the place to do it, to be in that environment,” Beamer said. “But that this place means so much to them that that’s where he wanted to propose to her, as well, which is pretty cool, being able to hear stories from people about what South Carolina means to them.

“And I know what it means to me. I mean I didn’t go to school here, but I know how special this place is and how much I love South Carolina and this University. It’s pretty cool to see two people that feel something similar.”

Shane Beamer: LaNorris Sellers was ‘really good’ in spring game

There was also of course football that took place during Saturday’s spring game.

Shane Beamer has not named the South Carolina starting quarterbac quite yet. But you have to feel pretty good about where LaNorris Sellers stands at this point. Sellers impressed during the spring game over the weekend, potentially taking another step ahead of Robby Ashford and others competing.

When asked his thoughts about Sellers’ performance, Beamer had nothing but praise. South Carolina likes the quarterback for his dual-threat abilities and Beamer let Norris run at times. Taking command of the offense is what he was most looking for, though, and Norris delivered.

“I thought Sellers was really, really good,” Beamer said. “He has been good all spring. He won an award, at halftime, that we decided on as coaches, and thought he looked very poised out there, very efficient. Looked good running the ball… I thought he did a really good job of operating the offense.”

Sellers only played in the first half and received his award at halftime, being named the Joe Morrison Offensive Player of the Spring. Not just for his nine of 11 performance with 70 passing yards and 38 yards plus a touchdown — but for how Sellers played through all 15 practices.

Ashford heavily struggled during the South Carolina spring game, completing just one pass for 14 yards. He was not able to run outside of the pocket either, having a noncontact jersey on. Using his feet is a big part of Ashford’s game dating back to his time at Auburn.

The difference between the two was stark and Beamer was impressed with Sellers. The quarterback himself took some time to asses his own performance, having high praise too.

“I think I did pretty good,” Sellers said. “We moved the ball, we scored, kept the ball safe. So, that’s the most important thing.”
