Clayton White previews spring game | South Carolina Gamecocks

The South Carolina spring game will take place Saturday night under the lights at Williams-Brice Stadium. Gamecocks defensive coordinator Clayton White feels good about what his unit has accomplished this spring, but he wants to see another strong showing on Saturday.

So what would constitute a successful spring game? White broke that down earlier this week.

“A successful spring game will obviously be clean football on both sides and walk away with nobody getting banged up. No toe injuries or anything whatsoever – just come out as clean as possible,” Clayton White said.

He also wants to see South Carolina defenders executing calls.

There is plenty of time to work through details during fall camp, but for now, he wants everyone lined up in the right spot and doing what they’re supposed to do.

“I think the most important thing for us is executing calls. Yes, I’m very competitive. [But] I’m not really caring on who wins the drill,” Clayton White said. “I more care about us executing the call and then obviously competing ‘til the end and whoever wins, wins. But very serious about us executing our calls. That’s the most important thing.”

There was a recent spring game where the Gamecocks didn’t do that, and it still has White upset.

“If we make a call, don’t drop the wrong way. Then all of a sudden — I think there was one spring game we had a guy wide open in the right corner and I’m still mad about it,” White said. “So just want to be able to execute calls when a call’s a call.”

Evaluating outlook for ‘experienced’ South Carolina football roster

Coming off head coach Shane Beamer‘s first losing season at South Carolina, the 2024 campaign is going to be an important one for the Gamecocks. However, it comes at a time of change for the SEC and with South Carolina facing a very difficult schedule.

Amid Spring ball, Mike Uva of GamecockCentral went on Andy Staples On3. There, he evaluated the outlook for an experienced South Carolina football team that has questions to answer.

“Just like any team, especially this time of the year, there’s gonna be some unknowns,” Mike Uva said. “It starts with quarterback. Even if LaNorris Sellers is the guy. To go from a veteran player like Spencer Rattler to going to a guy that’s going to be a redshirt freshman who appeared in just four games last year in limited time, there’s going to be growing pains.”
