All eyes were on the South Carolina and Iowa women’s basketball teams over the weekend as nearly 19 million people tuned in to watch the Gamecocks face off against Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes.

South Carolina pulled away late for the impressive win, and Dawn Staley‘s club has received plenty of praise for its play — not only on Sunday but all season as the Gamecocks finished undefeated.

The Empire State Building joined in by honoring the Gamecocks. The Empire State Building posted on Twitter that it was “shining in garnet and black” to honor South Carolina on Sunday.

Getting the attention of the Empire State Building is quite the honor but not a surprise given the attention the game received.

As for the game, Iowa jumped out to an early 10-0 lead against the Gamecocks but it didn’t last as Dawn Staley’s club battled back.

South Carolina took a three-point lead into halftime and ended up pulling away for an 87-75 victory.

The win capped off a perfect undefeated season for Staley’s club, which finished the year with a 38-0 record.

South Carolina used a balanced attack to beat the Hawkeyes. Freshman Tessa Johnson led the way with 19 points off the bench, while three other South Carolina players scored in double figures. In total, nine different players scored for South Carolina.

Iowa used a different approach, relying primarily on Caitlin Clark. The National Player of the Year finished with 30 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in the final game of her college career.

South Carolina announces plans for women’s basketball national championship parade

South Carolina isn’t just getting honored by the Empire State Building.

Back in Columbia, Gamecocks fans came to Colonial Life Arena on Monday to welcome the team home. South Carolina will also have a parade this weekend to recognize the team’s national championship.

GamecockCentral’s Mike Uva reported Monday that the city of Columbia will honor the women’s basketball team on their recent national championship win with a parade on Sunday, April 14. Additional information regarding the parade like street closings and parking will be provided this week. But according to Uva, the parade will begin at 2 p.m. ET on the 1700 block of Main Street (on the corner of Main and Laurel Streets).

Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson announced the news on Monday via press release, adding that the city will invite local elected officials, government entities, and community partners to join Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, City Council members, and University of South Carolina officials in the parade.

The Gamecocks fell short of the national championship game last season as they looked to repeat as title winners, falling to Iowa in last year’s Final Four. But this time around they got redemption on the Hawkeyes, avenging their elimination from last season’s NCAA Tournament while also making history in the process.
