South Carolina went through plenty struggles at quarterback throughout the 2021 season but still managed to post an impressive record under Shane Beamer. Now with Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler behind center, there is optimism for another significant leap toward the top in 2022.

As Spencer Rattler continues working with new teammates and a new playbook, he provided an update on his understanding and offered thoughts about the offense’s progress in the weekend scrimmage.

“It was fun,” said Rattler. “We got down the field in the redzone. Our emphasis now is on finishing in the redzone. We had a few things we had to fix up, but it was fun. We looked good, we made some explosive plays. Ran the ball well, threw the ball well. Obviously, we’ve got another week plus to work, so we’re excited to see our growth.

“We’ve only had one week of redzone before the scrimmage, so not giving ourselves an out or an excuse, but we’ve got to rep it more. We will rep it more. Our coaches will put us in the right positions and we’ll rep it and get better at it. I’m super confident we’ll do that.”

Spencer Rattler on South Carolina offense

As he continued talking about his transition at South Carolina, Spencer Rattler provided the biggest area of growth he has seen on offense since the spring.

“We’ve got a lot more guys now, which is good,” said Rattler. “I feel like we didn’t have that many skill positions healthy and even here yet. … But we have everybody here now. We’ve been able to have a whole summer together, obviously a whole spring, so you’re going to see growth.”

Wrapping up his talk about the status of the offense, Rattler spoke about his role as a quarterback to develop chemistry with each skill player as they arrive.

“It’s the same process I feel like everywhere,” said Rattler. “Whenever you get new guys in an offense, and the offense is so detailed… you’ve got to have great technique, you’ve got to get your right depths on routes. People don’t realize, an interception can be based off one step. So being that intricate and detailed with our work, that’s the hard part. Really getting those reps down and down and down and down.

“But we’re doing a great job. We’re making big, explosive plays, moving the ball when we need to. And once we get to where we want to, that’s where it gets scary. We’re on the right path.”
