Spencer Rattler Joins Andy Staples at SEC Media Days

Shane Beamer’s offense is expected to take a leap in 2023, starting with South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler. Add in a new offensive coordinator to the mix, and questions have been raised about what the new-look Gamecocks will be capable of this season.

Beamer hired former longtime NFL assistant coach Dowell Loggains as the Gamecocks’ new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Rattler previewed what fans should expect to see in Loggains’ offensive scheme.

“Obviously, he’s come in with his new offense. He’s been coaching quarterbacks for years in the NFL, and has a lot of experience,” Rattler said. “The offense is very quarterback friendly.

“It plays to our strengths. He knows what our strengths are, which is good. He loves our offense, our group, and keeps teaching us daily. We’re still putting together with camp here in two weeks. We’re excited to get in there and keep improving.”

Rattler blossomed for South Carolina throughout the 2022 season. He started all 13 games for South Carolina last season and saw him complete over 66 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,012 yards. He tossed 18 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

He was flanked by Antwane ‘Juice’ Wells, who arrived in Columbia as an FCS transfer from James Madison last season where he caught 68 passes for 928 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s expected to have an even greater role in 2023.

With Rattler at the helm, he helped lead Carolina to a pair of top-10 wins against Tennessee and Clemson to close the regular season. Rattler had arguably his best performances in those games, going a combined 55-of-76 passing for 798 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Add in the portal additions of Trey KnoxJosh Simon and Eddie Lewis — three players that Shane Beamer has named specifically throughout the spring — and South Carolina’s offense could be one of the more lethal in the SEC East this season.

Still, South Carolina ended the 2022 season 8-5 overall and 4-4 in SEC play, though, it’s an improvement from 2021’s 7-6 record — which was Beamer’s first as head coach. He has compiled a 15-11 record since taking over the day-to-day operations of the Gamecocks football program and looks to build on that further once the 2023 season kicks off.

South Carolina’s campaign gets underway on Sept. 2 against North Carolina in Charlotte. UNC has opened as 2.5-point favorites heading into the matchup, per Vegas Insider.
