Travian Robertson recently decided to join the South Carolina football staff as their defensive line coach. Before joining the Gamecocks, he spent the 2022 season with Willie Fritz’ staff and the Tulane Green Wave, helping guide them to one of the most successful seasons in school history last year.

It’s a homecoming for the former South Carolina star, who suited up with the likes of Melvin Ingram and Alshon Jeffery during his time in Columbia. In his most recent press conference, Robertson took the time to talk about his favorite memories during his playing days with the Gamecocks.

Travian Robertson will never forget the Alabama game

“We have some memories, man. The game for me, would be, I think everybody would say this for me, the Alabama game. Can I say two games? Alright, so, Alabama game was one. As you know, they were No. 1 in the nation. That was a three o’clock game and we were the underdogs. They had all the great NFL players. They had Julio [Jones]. All those guys. For us, you know, they just thought they were gonna come in and roll over us. The great thing about us is we was a close locker room and we stuck together. We weren’t perfect, but when we did things together as a unit, it was beautiful,” Robertson said.

“The second game would be….the Florida game. That was huge. That week, all you heard and I was so tired of hearing it. And I’ll never forget it–was how good Florida was. They got this and they got that. And I really looked in our locker room. And I was like, we got Alshon Jeffery. We got Stephon Gilmore. We got Melvin Ingram. We got me. We’ve got Marcus Lattimore. We’ve got Stephen Garcia. All the greats. But why are we about these guys?” Robertson said.

“And so, right before the game, five minutes before the game, I brought everybody up and basically said, hey they’re good, but we’re good too. And the opening play of that game, they ran a kickoff return back for a touchdown,” the South Carolina assistant said. He noted it didn’t take them long to bounce back. “We did. And we overcame it quick. That game, it was special. Because, I remember coach saying all we had to do was beat Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida, and we had a shot of playing on the big stage. And we did that,” Robertson said.

During his playing days, Robertson lettered during each of his four years from 2007-2011. He also served as the team’s captain in 2011. Robertson was also selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played for the Falcons, Seahawks, and Commanders during his four-year career in the National Football League.
