In just over two weeks, TCU is participating in the College Football Playoff for the first time. Before they take the field in Glendale, head coach Sonny Dykes and his staff notched a big win on the recruiting trail.

Arlington (Texas) Seguin four-star safety Jamel Johnson announced his commitment to the Horned Frogs on Friday. Landing the former Texas commit elevated TCU’s 2023 recruiting class to No. 19 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. The Horned Frogs’ group, which also ranks No. 3 in the Big 12, rose one spot from No. 20.

Johnson is the No. 336 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 28 safety and the No. 62 player in the state of Texas.

TCU continuing its in-state recruiting success

A 6-foot-1, 174-pound defensive back, Johnson is the 22nd high school recruit to commit to the Horned Frogs. Six are four-stars, while 16 are three-stars.

One key reason for TCU’s success on the recruiting trail is its ability to keep Texas players home. 19 of the Horned Frogs’ commits are from the Lone Star State, including their top seven prospects.

That group includes Johnson, Garland (Texas) Naaman Forest four-star interior offensive lineman Markis Deal, Mesquite (Texas) North Mesquite four-star wide receiver Cordale Russell, Red Oak (Texas) four-star safety Warren Roberson, Amarillo (Texas) Tascosa four-star defensive lineman Avion Carter, Round Rock (Texas) Stony Point four-star running back Cameron Cook and Temple (Texas) Lake Belton three-star safety Javeon Wilcox. All seven players are ranked in the top 450 of the On3 Consensus.

Dykes has also landed pledges from talented three-stars, including New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr linebacker Jonathan Bax. On3 ranks Bax higher than the rest of the industry as the No. 32 linebacker and No. 24 player in Louisiana.

At the moment, TCU is still in the mix for multiple blue-chip prospects. One of them is Freeport (Texas) Brazosport four-star safety Randon Fontenette, who decommitted from Utah on Nov. 3. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Horned Frogs have a 94.6% chance to land Fontenette.
