Tennessee Football Head Coach Josh Heupel Talks On Thursday Ahead Of Volunteers Vs. Uconn I Gbo

The Minnesota Vikings traded for former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Josh Dobbs after their starter, Kirk Cousins, tore his Achilles. That’s a move that the current coaching staff took note of and as Josh Heupel explained, is an exciting move.

For Heupel, Dobbs is a former Volunteer player who he’s gotten close with and being from South Dakota, grew up a Minnesota fan, so it’s hard not to be happy about the move.

“Excited for Josh. He’s one of the former guys that I’ve gotten to spend a lot of time with,” Josh Heupel said. “A lot of guys in the league end up going from organization to organization. He’s continued to fight and compete and when he’s gotten opportunities he’s done a remarkable job.”

Minnesota will be Dobbs’ ninth stop and seventh different team in the NFL. He came into the league as a fourth round pick in 2017 and has been a journeyman ever since. Now, he should get the opportunity to start for Minnesota and prove himself moving forward.

“And the opportunity for him to go to Minneapolis and to have the opportunity to play football, really excited for him, and obviously I grew up a Vikings fan with my uncle living there. My uncle, actually, sent me a text yesterday or the day before when he got the news. He was pretty fired up.”

Dobbs played at Tennessee from 2013 through 2016 under Butch Jones and became a fan favorite during that time.

Since becoming the head coach at Tennessee in 2021, Heupel has come to know Dobbs, perhaps connected by both being quarterbacks who had journeyman careers in the NFL, with Heupel playing for the Dolphins and Packers after being taken in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Josh Heupel praises offense following Kentucky win

After beating Kentucky Josh Heupel took the time to praise the offensive effort that the team made to get a win on the road. At the same time, he sees room for that side of the ball to continue to improve.

“I love the effort and energy we played with,” Heupel said. “At the end of the day, winning on the road in this league is really tough. That’s a good football team we played tonight. Proud of the effort from our guys. We got to play smarter as we continue to go. Got to be better in the red zone offensively. We take it as a good win in the league.”
