The Tennessee Volunteers are expected to lose one of the members of their coaching staff soon. Volunteer analyst David Weeks is expected to be hired as the tight ends coach for the Old Dominion Monarchs, Matt Zenitz reported on Wednesday evening. Before Tennessee, he was the tight ends coach for the Fordham Rams and a support staff member under Josh Heupel with the UCF Knights.

Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava impressed in first start

While working with the Vols this season, Tennessee averaged 31.8 points per game. In the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against the Iowa Hawkeyes, Volunteer freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava made his first career start, and he didn’t disappoint. The former five-star prospect in the 2023 cycle was one of the most coveted players in America coming out of high school and he began to show why.

He completed 12 of 19 passing attempts for 151 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 27 yards and three touchdowns on 15 attempts. Iamaleava earned MVP honors after Tennessee throttled Iowa 35-0. Starting quarterback Joe Milton III opted out of the bowl game to focus on preparing for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Tennessee finished with a 9-4 overall record in 2023. It may have been a little bit disappointing for Vol fans, but that’s still an impressive season, especially in the SEC. The Volunteers losses came to Florida, Alabama, Missouri, and Georgia. Alabama, Missouri, and Georgia all finished ranked in the top 10.

Weeks will be joining the Monarchs, led by head coach Ricky Rahne. Old Dominion finished with a 6-7 overall record in 2023, losing the Famous Toastery Bowl to Western Kentucky, 38-35. ODU featured one of the nation’s most dominant tacklers the past two seasons, linebacker Jason Henderson. He was named an All-American in back-to-back seasons (2022 and 2023). In 2022, he led the nation with 186 tackles, nearly 40 more than the second ranked player.

The Monarchs played in ten games that were decided by one score this season, leading the nation in that stat category. In 2022, they finished with an overall record of 3-9. One of those wins came against Virginia Tech at the beginning of the season. Old Dominion recently made the move from C-USA to the Sun Belt Conference in 2022, finishing with a combined record of 9-16 the past two years. The Monarchs have gone to three bowl games (Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, Myrtle Beach Bowl, and Famous Toastery Bowl) since the program moved up to Division I-A in 2014.
