Tennessee Head Coach Rick Barnes Talks Transfer Portal And Start Of Offseason

Tennessee big man Tobe Awaka surprised many when he announced earlier this month that he would be entering the transfer portal.

Awaka was ranked as a three-star recruit in the class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry rankings. He averaged 5.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this past season.

Vols coach Rick Barnes addressed Awaka’s decision to enter the portal during a press conference earlier this week.

“We respected Tobe a lot and we still do,” Rick Barnes said. “We’ve had guys tell us after they left they made a mistake. Sometimes, in a rush of a moment, people can listen to people and realize they maybe should’ve waited and thought it out a little bit more.”

Tobe Awaka was an immediate contributor for Tennessee as a freshman in 2022-23, appearing in 34 games and averaging 3.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

He took his production up another level in 2023-24 and would have likely been a major contributor for the Vols next season.

Rick Barnes didn’t close the door on Awaka returning to the program, but it sounds unlikely at this time.

“Tobe, obviously, we all respect him and love him for what he did for us. But if he feels he’s got to go through the process, he needs to do it,” Rick Barnes said. “But with that said, we’re not waiting, you know, because we’re going to move forward and build this roster as quickly as we can.”

Tobe Awaka releases statement on decision to enter transfer portal

Tobe Awaka released a statement to On3’s Joe Tipton explaining his decision to enter the transfer portal and reflecting on his time at Tennessee.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Dear Vol nation, the past two years have been some of the most influential of my life. The relationships gained and the experiences I’ve had will be forever life-changing.

I want to start by thanking Coach Barnes, all of the assistant coaches, and the rest of the basketball staff, for welcoming me with open arms and supporting me during my time at Rocky Top. I also want to thank my teammates — my brothers for life. It was a pleasure getting to know and going to war with you all these past two years.

Last but not least, thank you Vol nation for being one of the best fan bases in the country. Your hospitality and support has truly been a blessing.

This decision was extremely difficult to make, however, I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal. Thank you Vol nation, I will always love Tennessee.”
