The Tennessee Volunteers just lost a part of their offense. Tennessee wide receiver JaVonta Payton, who spent one year with the Volunteers, just announced that he is declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Payton caught 18 passes for 413 yards and six touchdowns this season with Tennessee. He averaged 22.9 yards per reception, which led all SEC receivers. Prior to his days at Tennessee, Payton played in JUCO, and also at Mississippi State. In two years with the Bulldogs, Payton caught 28 passes for 372 yards and a touchdown.

“My time at Tennessee, although it was short, was nothing short of amazing,” Payton said. “Being able to come home and play in my home state was a dream come true. I am so thankful to the coaching staff that believed and trusted in me. I would also like to thank all the coaches that have invested in me throughout my college career.

“To my teammates, thank you for embracing me so quickly. Battling each Saturday with you all are memories I’ll never forget. This bond we have formed can’t be broken. My brothers for life!

Lastly, thank you to the best fan base in the country. Vol nation, you all were so welcoming to this kid from Nashville Tennessee and I am forever grateful.

“As one door closes, another one opens. It has always been my dream to play at the highest level. I am excited to see what the future holds as I pursue my career in the NFL.”

Prior to Tennessee, Mississippi State, Payton began in JUCO

Out of college, Payton played for Northwest Community College in Mississippi. There, he played an important role, and he put himself in a position to transfer up after his sophomore season.

Payton then joined Mississippi State, where in addition to his role on the Bulldogs’ offense, he was a valuable contributor on special teams.

Prior to choosing Mississippi State out of JUCO, Payton held multiple offers, including from Ole Miss, North Carolina, and Kentucky. He also held an offer from Tennessee, where he ultimately wound up to end his career.
