Jimbo Fisher is just days from starting his fifth season in College Station. With a No. 6 standing in the preseason AP Poll, expectations have never been higher during his tenure at Texas A&M. ESPN’s David Pollack thinks he will meet them, especially because of the talent he has accumulated on the recruiting trail.

Pollack talked about Texas A&M’s outlook on the ‘College Gameday Podcast’. He sees the divisive split between people on what the Aggies can be but, in his opinion, the talent on this season’s team is better than any other season under Fisher.

“Texas A&M is so interesting to me. To me, it seems like everybody’s like sleeper and this team’s gonna be really good or this team sucks,” said Pollack. “I keep hearing, ‘Well, Jimbo has had talent. Jimbo is not a good coach. He’s not maximizing his talent.’ Jimbo hasn’t had talent like he has now.”

Fisher has recruited a Top-10 class every cycle since 2019. The biggest addition was the 2022 class that finished No. 1 in On3’s Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. Regardless of what kind of coach you think Fisher is, David Pollack says you can’t ignore that kind of talent in the Texas A&M program. He says it would actually be difficult for Fisher to underachieve with the players he’s working with this season.

“There’s a difference when you stack two top three classes on top of each other and the number one class in the country last year. Every coach in America will tell you that that’s kind of hard to screw up. It really is. It’s kind of hard to screw up that great of talent,” said Pollack. “Look at Kirby (Smart), look at Nick (Saban), look at Dabo (Swinney). Consistently they’re great coaches. Don’t get me wrong but, again, it ain’t like they’re missing with their talent year after year after year.”

David Pollack thinks this kind of jump in recruiting now requires a jump in the polls and College Football Playoff standings. The argument that Fisher doesn’t maximize his talent would truly become deafening then if they don’t make that leap. Pollack is ready to see that talent matter on the field for A&M and take them beyond nine wins.

“I look for A&M to be a team that they don’t need to be at eight anymore. If you’re going to do recruiting this well from now on, they need to be a team that is in the mix before the season and in the mix at the end of the season because your talent level says that. That’s gonna be something in the future that I’ll be looking forward to.”
