There are all sorts of pros and cons that you can take from Texas A&M’s first seven games this fall. Even so, what does that head coach himself think are the positives to take away from what his Aggies are doing on the field?

Jimbo Fisher picked out what he has liked from his team so far through the end of October during his radio show on Wednesday. To start, he noted the Aggie’s defense, something that many have complimented in 2023, considering how they apply pressure by stopping the run and impacting opposing quarterbacks.

“I mean, listen, I like what we’re doing in the run game on defense,” said Fisher. “We’re playing the run really well. Getting after the quarterback, doing those things.”

Again, defense has been the calling card for Texas A&M to this point. They’re a Top-35 unit in the country as they’ve given up just under 20 points per game. They’re also tied as the best in the nation in sacks with 29 while also being Top-20 in rushing yards allowed with just 105.1 a content.

From there, Fisher also likes how Texas A&M is starting their games off on offense. However, that led to a critique as he noted that their second halves have been much worse than their firsts.

“Offensively, like I said, we’re moving the ball really well in the first half. The last two games? It’s just been the second half. I mean it’s been the second half, not executing. Had things there but we’re just not executing,” Fisher explained. “We’ve got to get better at that and hit those plays at critical moments. Because, in the first halves, we’re driving well, starting the games well, starting them fast.”

Take the last two games as Fisher pointed out. Against No. 11 Alabama and at No. 19 Tennessee, A&M scored a combined 27 points in the first two quarters. Then, in the second halves of both matchups, they scored just six total as the Crimson Tide and Volunteers outscored them 29-6 to lead to two losses.

At 4-3, there’s not much that some in College Station want to take away as a positive. Still, Fisher knows what his team is doing well and now wants to see them turn their weaknesses into strengths as they come down the stretch of the season.

“There’s a lot of things we’ve liked and then some things we’ve got to do better,” stated Fisher.
