Texas A&M is making their 22nd straight appearance in the NCAA Softball Tournament but will host a regional at Davis Diamond for the first time in six years. That proves just how far the Aggies have come to Trinity Cannon during her career in College Station.

Cannon spoke about the development of their softball program during a press conference ahead of their regional on Wednesday. She said that she had just been speaking to one of her teammates about how unbelievable their position as a host is considering where they were upon her arrival in 2021. However, since this has come about, she gives all the credit to her team for getting there.

“I was telling Rylen (Wiggins) while we were throwing today,” Cannon recalled. “‘If you would’ve asked me my freshman year that we would be hosting my senior year?’. I would’ve never – this wouldn’t have been in my plan just because of how it was my freshman year.”

“I’m so thankful that the coaching staff has brought in these recruits and all these players to where we were able to do this,” said Cannon. “I think it’s just amazing, again.”

Over the past three years, Texas A&M has had to on the road to open the NCAA Tournament. They played the first two in the Norman Regional against a pair of No. 1-ranked teams in Oklahoma. Both of those Sooner teams went on to win the the national championship. They also went to the Austin Regional last year where the Texas eliminated them.

Now, as of this weekend, the Aggies earned the final hosting seed at No. 16 in the bracket. They did so with an overall record at 40-13. They also earned the No. 3 seed out of the Southeastern Conference. That was before losing to Florida, who ended up winning the SEC Tournament, in the semifinals.

Texas A&M is the eighth-highest rated team out of the SEC. This comes after all 13 teams from the league made it into the field.

The Aggies will throw the first pitch from their home field on Friday against Albany. They’ll do so in front of a crowd of fans who Cannon also wanted to recognize as much as any of them on the team or staff.

“It’s not only rewarding for us as players but for The 12th Man too,” Cannon added. “Like, they’ve put in countless weekends coming to support us and stuff like that.”

Texas A&M will look to advance out of their regional where they’ll then face whatever team comes out of the Austin Regional, which could be expected to be another top-overall seed that they’ll have to face in the last few years in No. 1 Texas.

Cannon is just glad to have the chance that she and her team have right now, which they’ll try to capitalize on later tonight.

“I’m just really thankful and blessed that we do have this opportunity to bring more games here.”
