According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals are releasing Jordan Hicks and allowing him to hit free agency early. The former Texas Longhorns linebacker joined the franchise back in 2017, playing and starting in 49 games while in the desert.

“Arizona Cardinals are releasing LB Jordan Hicks, per source,” Schefter said via Twitter. “Hicks played at a high level last season, registering 118 tackles and four sacks, but the Cardinals have to let their young first-round ILBs play, and now are letting Hicks hit the market early.”

Hicks was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles after leaving college in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. He’s played in 92 games throughout his career and the only three games not started were during his rookie season. Throughout all seven years of his career, Hicks has recorded 638 tackles, 41 tackles for a loss, and forced four fumbles. In pass coverage, the linebacker has 11 interceptions and 34 passes defended.

Now, Hicks will have the opportunity to find another place where he can consistently start with Arizona looking to give younger linebackers opportunities. NFL teams now have a quality option out there on the open market.

Former Texas Longhorns DT reacts to Russell Wilson trade

Former Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Poona Ford, now with the Seattle Seahawks, was taken aback by the franchise’s decision to trade Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.

Wilson, 33, has been with the Seahawks ever since the organization selected him with the 75th-overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Though Wilson fell all the way to the third round, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound quarterback quickly made a name for himself as a franchise quarterback. Not only has Wilson been selected to the second-team All-Pro roster (2019), but he’s been named to nine NFL Pro Bowl rosters, while winning Super Bowl XLVIII for the Seahawks. But several years after Wilson defeated the Denver Broncos in that 2014 Super Bowl, he’s now been traded to Denver, leaving Seattle with a number of quarterbacking questions. The Seahawks gained Drew Lock in the trade from Denver, but Ford has a better idea.

A 5-foot-11, 310-pound defensive tackle, Ford wants to quarterback the Seahawks following the departure of Wilson. All jokes aside, Ford could enter the 2022 season with an expanded role for Seattle, after turning in his most productive season to date in 2021. Last year, Ford finished with 53 total tackles (23 solo stops), two sacks, six tackles for a loss and six quarterback hits while starting all 17 games.
