The Texas Longhorns quarterback competition is far from over between returner Hudson Card and former five-star Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers. Steve Sarkisian made it clear after the spring game that the battle is still on, but that isn’t stopping anyone from speculating on how things will play out in the fall.

College football insider Josh Pate broke down why he believes the former national No. 1 prospect will definitively take the reins in Austin this season.

“I got a text from a buddy yesterday that indicates what many of you felt,” Pate started on Late Kick Live. “If you just take that spring game in a vacuum, and you just look at productivity, you would be led to believe this is a pretty legit quarterback battle. Like there’s not a whole lot separating these two.

“I think there’s going to be a significant separation by the time fall rolls around,” Pate continued. “I think Quinn Ewers, I think that’s going to be the guy who definitively takes this job. He does not definitively have it right now but when you look at where he is, relative to Hudson Card, and you understand where they are in their respective developments and you understand Quinn Eewers, who is all-world physically, has an entire summer session and then fall camp still in front of him… you will see the cream rise. That’s not a knock on Hudson Card. There’s a reason Quinn Ewers has had the hype behind his name. He hasn’t accomplished anything yet but he is the real deal. Everyone wanted him for a reason and that reason will eventually manifest in him starting for them.”

Sarkisian closes spring with temperature check on QB competition

This weekend, Steve Sarkisian shed some light on the most important decision he’ll be making prior to the beginning of the 2022 season. After the Orange-White spring game, Sarkisian closed the spring with a temperature check on the quarterback situation.

“I think it’s going to go (on), I think to be fair to both those guys. I mean, you probably saw tonight, both guys really had some flash plays. Some really cool plays of them, whether it’s throwing down the field, orchestrating drives in the red area,” stated Sarkisian. “And we saw some plays that I think both guys would love to have back. But that’s part of the position. Sometimes you can’t control some of the other things going on around you. But I like where these guys are at.

“If I could’ve said that they would play this good after 15 practices this spring, or if one of them would have, I’d be ecstatic. I’m really happy with the growth where they’re at, I think we’re at a really good spot in that position. Now, we have to continue to grow. We can’t settle. We’ve got to take these guys to new heights. And we’ve got to get Maalik [Murphy] going, and get Maalik, kind of, you know, getting him healthy, and this summer’s going to be big for him, to put himself in position for fall camp, as well.”

Evidently, Steve Sarkisian is going to take his time in naming the Longhorns’ starting quarterback, much like he did last season. Still, that won’t stop the football world from theorizing who will be under center on Sept. 3.
