Could Texas Develop Any New Schemes Before Washington? | Inside Texas Football

Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is a big fan of current Longhorns signal caller Quinn Ewers. So much so, he likes Texas’ chances against No. 2 Washington in the College Football Playoff.

Ewers took some steps forward in 2023 and stayed relatively healthy, despite missing time again. But he’s playing his best football at the right time. If he keeps it up, Texas could be playing in the national championship just as McCoy did in 2009.

Heck, Texas could play Alabama for it all should the Crimson Tide beat Michigan.

“I’ll start out with Quinn, I think Quinn is playing awesome,” McCoy said on Pardon My Take. “I think he’s got good weapons around him, you know, probably a first or second round tight end, a couple receivers that are gonna play in the NFL. And you know, the offensive line has stayed healthy and they’re playing great.

“So you know, you look at the progression Quinn has made from last year to this year, it’s exactly how it should be. That’s a credit to him, like he’s very accurate with the football. He doesn’t turn it over very often. Like, I feel very good about our game against Washington.”

However, McCoy knows Washington is very elite and has the opportunity to keep itself in games no matter the circumstances. There’s just too much talent on the offensive side of the football.

“The thing that I keep thinking about with Washington is like we match up pretty good, but it’s like even if Washington plays a bad game, there are two receivers on the outside who could like quietly have 150 yards receiving and that’s like the equalizer,” McCoy said. “They’re still going to score. They’re still going to make plays and all of a sudden, you know, they’re in it at the end of the game, and they find ways to win.”

The quarterback matchup is fascinating by the way. McCoy raved about Ewers, but Washington has its own superstar: Heisman finalist Michael Penix Jr.

“And, you know, Penix is a really veteran, seasoned guy like he’s accurate with the football,” McCoy said. “And Washington is also well coached, like I haven’t watched all their games, I watched a couple and it’s like the adjustments they make you by the time they get into the third, fourth quarter, they’re rolling right there.

“They’re just a sound football team. So I want to keep saying like, no, Texas is gonna line them up. Texas (will win), but I also know that even if Washington plays bad, the receivers are good enough to keep them in the game.”
