With each passing day, Texas Tech continues to feel more and more pressure to lock down the commitment of Temple (Texas) Lake Belton Five-Star Plus+ wide receiver Micah Hudson. The Red Raiders have long been favored to nab the top-10 prospect’s pledge, yet he remains on the board as September pushes onward.

Since taking an official visit to Lubbock in June, it’s been quiet on the recruiting front for Hudson. He canceled a visit to Texas, making Tech the clear frontrunner in the process. A decision was once expected back in the middle of the summer, but his commitment currently remains in the air.

The longer it takes for Hudson, the better for Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns, according to InsideTexas recruiting insider Gerry Hamilton. Texas remains on Tech’s heels as they try and nab the highest-ranked prospect left on the board in the 2024 cycle, per the On3 Industry Ranking.

Texas maintaining contact with Hudson

The No. 7 recruit in the class may not have made that visit to Austin, but that’s not stopping Sarkisian and wide receivers coach Chris Jackson from keeping the foot on the gas. Hudson has taken his fair share of visits to Texas in the past, keeping some hope alive for the soon-to-be SEC newcomer.

“I think the longer this plays out, the better it is for Texas and Texas A&M. Texas has maintained contact with Micah Hudson throughout all of this, even when it looked like it was imminent he was going to commit to Texas Tech this summer,” Hamilton told On3’s Josh Newberg.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM), Texas Tech still has an 81.7% chance to win the recruitment, while Texas is behind at 14.7%. That percentage could increase if Hudson’s commitment date makes it all the way to December and the signing period.

How long will Hudson hold off?

Hamilton, On3’s Matt Zenitz and Sooner Scoop’s Josh McCuistion have all logged On3 RPM picks for Hudson to commit to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders would love nothing more than to wrap the five-star’s recruitment up and obtain a headlining addition to their 2024 recruiting class — which currently ranks No. 24 in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking.

It just might not be that easy. With the likes of Sarkisian and Jimbo Fisher nipping at the heels, there will be plenty of reason for Tech to worry about reeling in Hudson until pen is put to paper.

“The thing that’s interesting about Micah is all of these kids that initially said they were going to commit in December or at an All-American game in January — 99 percent of those kids have peeled off of that,” Hamilton said. “Is he going to be the one that doesn’t? If he doesn’t, that’s a long time for Texas Tech to have the target on their back — especially when it’s Texas and Texas A&M coming after them.”
