One of the top defensive players in the NCAA Transfer portal has committed to Texas.

UTSA transfer and twitchy pass rushing linebacker Trey Moore announced Saturday afternoon he will be a Longhorn.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound redshirt sophomore with two years left to play entered the transfer portal December 5.

Once Moore announced his intentions to transfer, he instantly became one of the most sought after pass rushing linebackers in the portal.

Texas, Ohio State and Alabama were three of the many schools that jumped into the mix. Moore made a visit to Texas December 9-10, and met with head coach Steve Sarkisian Sunday. He followed up with in-home visits with Ohio State and Alabama. He then made an official visit to Alabama the following weekend.

Moore at UTSA

Moore was named a Freshman All-American by various media outlets. He racked up 59 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and eight sacks. The 18 tackles for loss are a UTSA record. Turns out the redshirt freshman campaign was just a warmup. He became one of the college football’s top pass rushers in 2023 recording 45 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks.

Moore is also a standout student. He was a two-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient and Commissioner’s Honor Roll member in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Moore coming out of Smithson Valley High

Moore came out of Smithson Valley High as a lightly recruited pass rush prospect with offers from UTSA, North Texas and a number of Ivy League universities. He became a very disruptive player as a senior. Moore was named 27-6A Defensive Player of the Year for head coach Larry Hill at Smithson Valley High School, and was an San Antonio Express-News All-Area Team pick. He recorded 70 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, eight sacks, 16 quarterback hurries, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks in 2020.
