Quinn Ewers: ‘I feel I'm getting a PHD in QB play' under Steve Sarkisian

Quinn Ewers has just wrapped up his second spring under head coach Steve Sarkisian in preparation for the 2023 college football season. The Longhorns starting quarterback is expected to have a better command of the offense, which will expand his head coach’s play-calling ability.

In his time at Texas, Ewers has grown close with Sarkisian and, even more so, has learned a great deal from his head coach. During a recent interview, Ewers likened what he has learned from Sarkisian to getting a Ph.D. on the field.

“Man, he’s a great coach. I love being around Coach Sark. You know, like I feel like I’m getting a Ph.D. in football quarterback play,” said Ewers. “So, I couldn’t be more excited from for him being my coach and just the relationship we’ve built. It’s been great, and I’m excited to see where it goes.”

Last season for Texas, in just 10 games, Ewers threw for 2177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. That was just his first season at Texas under Sarkisian and just his first as a starting quarterback in college football. But with what he has learned from the Longhorns’ offensive-minded head coach from last season and over this offseason, the expectations are huge for Ewers.

And if he can put that Ph.D. in quarterback play to good use, Ewers and the Longhorns could very well find themselves in the College Football Playoff, competing for a national championship at the end of the season.

Ewers opens up on his relationship with Arch Manning

Texas has one of the most loaded quarterback rooms in all of college football, featuring EwersMaalik Murphy, and Arch Manning, among others. But according to Ewers, the starter for 2023, it’s a congenial vibe among the Longhorns signal callers.

Manning came to Texas this offseason with plenty of fanfare as the third generation of Manning’s takes on American football. But any speculation that there could be friction with Ewers, who came to Texas with oodles of fanfare, himself, was shot down by the Longhorns starter.

“Me and Arch are great buddies. I’ve known him — I got to know him pretty well in the recruiting process. We’ve only grown in our relationship. Like you said, we have a great relationship,” Ewers said at the Manning Passing Academy. “We get along well. The whole quarterback room is just such a great group of guys. No one is trying to undercut somebody or try to get ahead in certain ways. We are just a good group of guys, great buddies. We’ve been hanging out together. Those are like my best friends, the people in the quarterback room.”
