Texas interim basketball head coach Rodney Terry led the ‘Horns to a remarkable run to the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA Tournament. While the ‘Horns lost in their matchup on Sunday against the Miami Hurricanes in excruciating fashion, it appears school administrators had seen enough, and they knew they had the right guy to lead the Texas basketball program. The Longhorns are going to offer their head basketball coaching position to Terry, according to 247sports.com.

Terry and Texas AD Chris Del Conte are expected to meet within the next 24 hours about the position, according to college basketball insider Jeff Goodman. If an agreement can be reached quickly, an official announcement could come as early as Tuesday, per Chip Brown of 247sports.com.

Terry did a remarkable job as the interim head coach for the Longhorns this season, guiding the team to the program’s first Elite Eight in 15 years. It also marked the eighth time in Longhorn basketball history they advanced to the Elite Eight.

Texas blew a 13-point lead in the second half against Miami on Sunday afternoon. They were up on the ‘Canes 64-51 with 13:22 remaining in the contest, but the Longhorns appeared to tighten up in the most critical moments of the game down the stretch, allowing Miami to mount a furious comeback. Certainly, the devastating loss to the Hurricanes will sting for quite some time, but there are still plenty of positives to appreciate from what the team accomplished this year under Terry’s watch.

Texas finished with a 29-9 overall record this year, the third most victories in a single season in program history. They also finished with a 12-6 record in the Big 12. The Longhorns were dominant on their home floor, finishing with a 17-1 record in the Moody Center. Texas also won the 2023 Big 12 Tournament crown with Terry at the helm. The ‘Horns thrashed the Kansas Jayhawks in a 76-56 beatdown, to bring home their second Big 12 Tournament title in three years.

Terry took over the Texas basketball program as their interim head coach after the school decided to part ways with their former head coach, Chris Beard, who has since taken the head coaching position with the Ole Miss Rebels. The Longhorns parted ways with Beard on Jan. 5 amid domestic violence charges, that have since been dropped. After Terry took over, Texas finished with a 22-8 record, including eight wins against AP Top 25 opponents.
