Hudson Card enjoyed his third consecutive start under center for Texas during Saturday’s 38-20 victory over West Virginia. With preseason QB1 Quinn Ewers creeping closer to full strength and Card dealing with a nagging hamstring injury, there was some uncertainty over what head coach Steve Sarkisian would do at the position.

Sarkisian elected for Card to start, and the competition is going to be monitored on a week-by-week basis.

“Hudson’s more healthy. We haven’t been healthy at that position for a month, and Hudson is just more healthy right now,” Sarkisian said after the win. “Again, I have a responsibility to our football team to put the players out there that give us the best opportunity to have success. I have a responsibility each individual player on our team to make sure that if I put them out there, that they’re capable of playing and playing at a high level and that they’re they’re comfortable enough to do it from a safety standpoint.

“It’s been it’s been uncomfortable, especially a month ago of what we were going to do with the position, but it’s getting more comfortable by the week. I just felt like Hudson was was more healthy than Quinn, and that’s why he was out there.”

ESPN’s college football insider Pete Thamel noted Saturday morning on College GameDay that Ewers wasn’t expected to start agains the Mountaineers, but Ewers is expected to ramp up his rehab and get back on the practice field in the days leading up to the Longhorns’ next matchup.

“He’s been limited, and there’s a thought that he could play the earliest in that Oklahoma game,” Thamel said. The Longhorns and Sooners meet for the annual Red River Showdown this Saturday, and Ewers availability will be likely updated throughout the week.

The Longhorns and Sooners are set to kickoff live from Norman, Oklahoma at noon ET with ABC carrying the national broadcast.
