Even as a true freshman who’s in Austin early, Arch Manning has become the big man on campus at Texas. As the family member of quarterback royalty and the No. 1 player in On3’s 2023 Industry Rankings, all eyes are on Arch with spring practice starting for the Longhorns.

Even so, Steve Sarkisian tempered expectations with his breakdown of Manning’s performance so far this spring. There’s obviously a lot of talent and edge to him as a prospect but, overall, he’s still a young player that has a long way to go considering his journey has just begun.

“For Arch today? Day one? There’s some plays, for sure, that he would love to have back. And there’s some other plays that he made where everybody was like wow that’s a heck of a play,” said Sarkisian. “So, again, true freshman, should still be in high school. But he brings a worker’s mentality and he wants to be really good at this game.”

Manning enrolled early at Texas after finishing his senior season at Isidore Newman High School. That should give him a jump start in his college development as he competes alongside the other Longhorn quarterbacks, specifically Quinn Ewers.

Still, the former five-star quarterback has a ways to go considering today was day one. While the media circus around Manning on The 40 Acres is just starting, all that’s going to matter is the growth he shows from the baseline he set today to what he can eventually become in the future.

The Texas Longhorns took to the Frank Denius Fields early on Monday morning for the first of 15 spring practices that will culminate with the annual Orange-White Game on April 15. For a group of early-enrollee true freshmen and transfers, it was their first time to put on a helmet as a Longhorn football player. One of those players was Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Arch Manning.
