Smoke has been billowing around the status of Orlando Jones four-star defensive lineman and current Texas signee D’antre Robinson.

The 6-foot-3.5, 315-pounder committed to the Longhorns over Florida on July 20 and proceeded to put pen to paper during the December Early Signing Period. Since then, Texas DL coach Bo Davis left Austin to take the same position with LSU.

Davis was Robinson’s lead recruiter and developed an important relationship with the blue-chip lineman. With him now in Baton Rouge, rumors of Robinson asking for a release from his National Letter of Intent have begun swirling.

“(Robinson) had talked to Steve Sarkisian five times since the news of Bo Davis leaving hit,” Texas recruiting insider Gerry Hamilton said on The Inside Scoop. “I will say this, he’s definitely considering asking for a release from his National Letter of Intent, that’s definitely in play.”

The coaching carousel is turning faster than ever, as coaches and staffers all over the country are leaving for other jobs seemingly at will. Robinson isn’t the first recruit to see his position coach leave just as he’s set to arrive on campus, but Davis himself was a monumental factor in Robinson’s decision to commit and sign with the Longhorns.

“My closest relationship is with Bo Davis. We talk everyday and we can talk about everything,” Robinson told On3’s Hayes Fawcett upon his commitment.

“That’s who he had connected with,” Hamilton said. “That’s who he had the relationship with, that was his guy and that was a big reason when he committed July 20th, he said the development with Bo Davis was a huge piece for his decision to go to Texas over Florida at the time.”

SEC programs ready to pounce if Robinson decommits from Texas

Florida was the other finalist for Robinson back when he committed in the summer. The in-state Gators had him on campus plenty throughout his recruitment and have the established relationships. Hamilton also sees LSU — Davis’ new home — and Auburn as potential suitors if Robinson does indeed come back on the board.

“I think if that were to happen, I think you could look at Florida and I think you could look at LSU as the two main possibilities. I think Auburn also would have some interest there, but really I think it would come down to Florida and LSU if he goes through with that and Texas were to release him from his Letter of Intent — we’ll see how that plays out,” Hamilton said.

“We’ll see if Texas has their D-line hire and they at least want D’Antre to have a conversation or two with that D-line hire before Texas decides what to do with that National Letter of Intent.”

Robinson is the No. 273 overall prospect and No. 28 DL in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 35 player in Florida.
