Bijan Robinson is an important part of Texas‘ football program – there’s no question about it. A versatile running back, Robinson is coming off a strong season for the Longhorns in 2021, as he rushed for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns on 195 total carries – in addition to making 26 receptions for 295 yards and four touchdowns.

After a successful campaign a year ago, Robinson is now working to become more of a leader for Texas as it heads into the 2022 season – and head coach Steve Sarkisian is happy with what he’s seeing out of the running back.

Meeting with reporters on Tuesday, Sarkisian spoke about how Robinson has taken on more of a leadership role over the course of winter conditioning and spring practices.

“I think it’s been good for him,” Sarkisian said. “We did some different things in winter conditioning to try and empower more leaders on the team – Bijan being one of those guys. I think that pretty much all of those guys embraced that role. The best teams that I’ve ever been a part of – yes, as coaches we’re trying to lead, but player-led teams ultimately become – those are the best teams I’ve ever been a part of, when they hold each other accountable in the locker room.

“To do that, you have to empower people to do it. Like I said, we tried to empower those guys in winter conditioning – Bijan was one of those guys. I think he got more comfortable in that role.”

While Robinson had a positive season a year ago, Texas’ campaign as a whole wasn’t the best as the Longhorns compiled just a 5-7 overall record – which included a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play. Coming into the 2022 season, Sarkisian is hopeful that his club can get back on track – and Robinson’s leadership can help the Longhorns do just that.
