Texas Offense Became More Consistent In 2023

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian provided an injury update on Longhorns wideout Xavier Worthy following Saturday’s Big 12 Championship Game win over Oklahoma State.

Sarkisian had positive news to report on the California native.

“He’s OK. X-rays were negative so he’ll be OK,” Sarkisian told ABC immediately after the Longhorns’ 49-21 win.

The junior was banged up early in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s victory, with the Longhorns leading 42-14 at the time.

Xavier Worthy caught a pass for a 10-yard gain and landed awkwardly on his left leg on his way out of bounds. He immediately grabbed his left ankle when he hit the ground and, after receiving some assistance, headed directly to the locker room.

Worthy had six catches for 86 yards, prior to going down. He has been one of the most dynamic playmakers on Texas’ roster this year, leading the Longhorns with 883 yards and five receiving touchdowns entering Saturday’s game.

Quinn Ewers sets Big 12 Championship Game record for passing yards

Xavier Worthy was one of the top targets for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers as he had a record-setting day during the Big 12 Championship Game.

Ewers set a Big 12 Championship Game record through a little more than three quarters.

The sophomore had 452 passing yards by early in the fourth quarter, eclipsing the previous record set by Sam Bradford at 384 passing yards in 2008.

“I think we’re giving him good protection and he’s seeing the field pretty well and guys are making plays for him down the field,” coach Steve Sarkisian said at halftime.

Ewers’ day was done early in the fourth quarter, with Texas protecting a 49-14. The Longhorns went on to win 49-21.

He suffered a brief injury scare when he went down on the sideline in the third quarter, but Sarkisian clarified that his quarterback was doing fine.

“He’s fine, he just got the wind knocked out of him,” Sarkisian said to Molly McGrath on the ABC broadcast. “He’s back in now.”

It remains to be seen if Saturday’s game was the final Big 12 game for Quinn Ewers. The former top quarterback recruit could turn pro, but Pete Thamel said on ESPN College GameDay on Saturday that it seems as if Ewers is leaning towards returning to school.

“Sources have told me that the chances of Quinn Ewers returning to Texas for the 2024 season have increased exponentially in recent weeks,” Thamel said. “Ewers is only 20 years old. He’s a redshirt sophomore. And today will mark his 21st career start. There’s a burgeoning feeling in Ewers’ camp that an extra year of development would help his long-term success. NFL evaluators use 25 career starts as a line of demarcation for success.”
