Texas suffered a heartbreaking loss last weekend, missing an opportunity to beat the top team in the Big 12 conference in No. 4 ranked TCU, falling 17-10 at home to the Horned Frogs. With two games remaining in the season, head coach Steve Sarkisian was asked what his big picture message was to his team moving forward.

“Sometimes what we say in out team meeting is for us, but the reality of it is this, we have an opportunity. If we can win our final two games, there’s an opportunity there that presents where we can be in the Big 12 Championship game,” Sarkisian.

The Longhorns do have a chance to make the conference title game, but it’s a slim one. The Longhorns currently tie for third in the Big 12, and would need to hold up their end of the bargain and get some help from some other teams in order to get another shot at TCU in the title game. Texas would have to beat Kansas and Baylor in their next two matchups, and then would have to bank on the losses of others and their favorable head-to-head- wins to propel them to the championship.

“So I like to do that with the guys because I don’t like them to act like I’m not aware of what’s happening, we’re aware and I’m transparent with them,” Sarkisian said. “But then I turn right around and I drill right down into what’s the most important thing, and that’s this week’s game and then what’s the most important think to this week’s game and that’s today.”

Sarkisian is not naive with his team with the big picture outlook of their season, but it’s clear that he wants their biggest focus to be on the present and what they can control in the moment.

“In our world, we say it all the time, today is the most important day and making sure that we have the focus, the mental intensity on today of what we’re doing, what we’re trying to accomplish, why it’s important to accomplish these things, and what it can mean for Saturday,” Sarkisian said. “So that’s how we kind of layered it with them without getting into all the particulars that we touched on.”

The Longhorns may not quite be in control of their own destiny, but if they remain focused on the task in front of them and handle their business for the remainder of the season, the dominoes may remarkably fall in their favor when it’s all said and done.
