One of the biggest quarterback transfer names is still on the market in Casey Thompson. The former Texas Longhorn is taking his time making a decision after entering the portal on Dec. 17.

Thompson’s father, Charles, told Mitch Sherman of The Athletic, that the quarterback is down to five schools. Auburn, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma are still in the running for the former Texas man. According to Max Olson, Thompson was in Lincoln on Wednesday, visiting the Cornhuskers.

All five schools still in the race have all seen quarterbacks transfer out of their program this offseason. The Sooners have seen two in Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams, while UCF’s Dillon Gabriel flipped from UCLA to new head coach Brent Venables.

Thompson is making his second go-round in the transfer portal, entering after the 2018 season as well. However, when former Texas quarterback Cam Rising was picked up by Utah, Thompson decided to stay in Austin and backup Sam Ehlinger.

Ehlinger left for the NFL after the 2020 season, leaving the competition open for Thompson and freshman Hudson Card. The latter originally won the job but after poor play against Arkansas, Thompson started the rest of the season for the Longhorns.

Texas Longhorns player expected to return to program

According to Mike Roach of Horns247, Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Jordon Thomas is expected to return to the program. The true freshman stepped away from football in the fall, citing personal issues.

Coming out of high school, Thomas was rated a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus. A native of Port Arthur, TX, the edge rusher was rated the No. 45 player within the Lone Star State and No. 25 at his position.

When Thomas was announcing his college decision, Texas A&M was the other school in the running. Then head coach Tom Herman was able to pull out the victory to land the highly touted pass rusher.

Texas had major problems on the defensive line during the 2021 season, especially with the pass rush. Thomas, plus a good defensive line haul from the 2022 class, should bring immediate reinforcements for Bo Davis and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

Thomas will have the opportunity to come into spring camp and compete for immediate playing time. All four of the previously mentioned players will be returning as well, hoping to improve in Year Two under Kwiatkowski.
