One scrimmage in for Steve Sarkisian and there are already serious injury concerns for Texas. Two starters, wide receiver Isaiah Neyor and offensive lineman Junior Angilau, are reportedly out of the season after suffering knee injuries. Running back Roschon Johnson also got injured over the weekend but his diagnosis seems to be more positive.

According to Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods, Johnson is “only” expected to miss a “month-ish” with an ankle injury. There was some serious concern regarding the status of the senior running back, who was carted off the field during Saturday’s scrimmage.

Saturday marked exactly one month from Texas’ nonconference matchup against Alabama. If he cannot go on Sept. 10, UTSA is on the schedule for the following week.

Johnson is the backup running back for Texas but still a huge loss for the program, even if it’s short-term. He has emerged as one of the leaders in Austin, something rare for somebody in his depth chart position. Of course, Bijan Robinson will be the star at running back but losing Johnson for at least a couple of games this season will hurt.

Texas has depth behind Johnson who can step up in his absence as well. Keilan Robinson is entering his second season with the program after starting at Alabama. Jonathon Brooks has been turning heads entering his sophomore campaign, while true freshman Jaydon Blue is expected to contribute throughout the year as well.

More on Roschon Johnson

When Johnson was being recruited under former head coach Tom Herman, he played quarterback at Port Neches-Groves High School. After a running back shortage during the 2019 season, Johnson made the switch over and instantly contributed. He’s never looked back and has become an unsung hero for the Longhorns over the past few seasons.

Entering his fourth season with the program, Johnson has appeared in 35 games but made just four starts. Robinson has held the starting duties over the past year and a half, meaning Johnson has never been the featured back. Even so, he is considered a top back in the Big 12 and will still have the opportunity to prove himself this season.

Johnson nearly got 100 carries last season, finishing with 96 for 569 yards and five touchdowns. His best performance of the season came against Kansas State, putting the entire Texas team on his back to close out the regular season. His 31 carries, 179 yards, and one touchdown were a highlight during an otherwise disappointing 2022 for Texas.
