Texas Longhorns head coach Chris Beard has struck in the transfer portal once again, landing Jabari Rice from the New Mexico State Aggies. However, in the announcement, Rice makes a vital mistake in his Twitter post, calling it “Texas University” instead of the University of Texas.

Notably, the Longhorns’ biggest in-state rival, Texas A&M, refers to them mockingly as Texas University.

“First, I would like to thank God for waking me up every single day to have a chance at success,” Rice said in a statement released via Twitter. “I want to thank Coach Jan’s, Anywar, CB, Miller, Stubbs, DT, Owens, and all of Aggie Nation for believing in me until the end. Thank you for all the schools that showed love and interest in me. Through the process one thing I learned is only you are gonna have to live with your decisions. So with that being said, I will be coming home for my last year and joining Texas University. Throw the cards in and roll the dice because I’m BettingOn10.”

He has since deleted the tweet.

The University of Texas was founded in 1883 and resides in Austin, TX. The basketball program played its first game during the 1906 season and has appeared in three Final Fours since then. Beard is the 25th head coach in program history and looking to continue the success of the 2021-2022 season.

While Rice may be heading to the University of Texas and not “Texas University”, it’s still a huge pickup for Beard. Nothing has been made official but the Longhorns could be losing a few guards this season. One has already decided to transfer out, while more could be going professional.

Rice will be entering his fifth season of college basketball, scoring double figures over the past three. He averaged 11.9 points per game last season and shot 34.1% from behind the three-point line. With 5.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists added on, Rice was second-team All-WAC last year.

Rice will be an immediate impact for Beard, hoping to bring similar scoring numbers in the Big 12.

Texas Longhorns guard Devin Askew enters transfer portal

Devin Askew – who began his collegiate career at Kentucky before transferring to Texas – has entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. Askew shared the news publicly on his Instagram page Tuesday morning.

“I would like to start by thanking the University of Texas for giving me the opportunity to come and play the game I love,” Askew wrote. “To my teammates, I wouldn’t have gone to battle with anyone else on the court, and I can’t express how much I appreciate every one of you. I’d also like to thank Coach [Chris] Beard and the entire coaching staff for providing me with their support and guidance this past year. You all allowed me to grow as both a basketball player and as a man.

“After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”

Askew, a former On3 Consensus four-star recruit out of the Class of 2020, averaged 2.1 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game for Texas last season while shooting 40% from the field. He averaged 14.9 minutes per game for the Longhorns.

Askew spent the 2020-2021 season at Kentucky – averaging 6.5 points per game – before making the decision to transfer to Texas.
