With the addition of Saint Louis University five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo, Texas pushed its number of five-star commits in the 2024 cycle to three — tying a slew of schools for the second-most five-star prospects.

But the Longhorns aren’t done. Steve Sarkisian’s staff in Austin remains in contact with top recruits around the country — including Lafayette (La.) Acadiana five-star defensive lineman Dominick McKinley. McKinley pledged to Texas A&M in September, but the Aggies have struggled with expectations, currently sitting at 5-3 on the season with a pair of currently ranked teams still on the schedule.

Texas analyst Gerry Hamilton told Josh Newberg on On3’s The Inside Scoop football recruiting show that the ‘Horns are in a bit of a ‘wait and see’ mode when it comes to McKinley recruitment. How the Aggies perform down the stretch could play a major part.

Texas staying in contact with McKinley

“Yeah I think it’s going to be interesting how the rest of A&M’s season plays out there — I think there’s enough just unknown with this recruiting class,” Hamilton said. “Now with Weston Davis flipping to LSU, Dre’lon Miller from Silsbee (Texas) decommitting — looking like LSU is the favorite. Like you said there Josh, LSU is doing well against Texas A&M right now in that recruiting class.

“Dom McKinley has been in contact lightly with Texas in recent weeks. He actually reached out to Texas last week just via text. So the communication is still there and as long as that family and the kid are communicating with Texas, I think Texas is sitting back and they’re going to be in position to make a move there if Texas A&M struggles at the end of this season and there’s more cold feet in that recruiting class and those questions really get ramped up about the future of Jimbo Fisher in College Station. I think at that point in time, if that transpires then I think Texas will be right there in position to make a move for McKinley.”

McKinley is the nation’s No. 29 overall prospect in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 6 defensive lineman and No. 1 player from Louisiana.
