Texas Longhorns two-sport athlete Brenen Thompson suffered a recent injury according to a report from his mother. Thompson not only plays wide receiver for the Longhorns, but runs track for them, and apparently, he’s suffered from a hamstring injury at recent track practice.

Thompson’s mother tweeted that he injured his hamstring during a practice last Tuesday, which required an MRI. The MRI came back negative for any strains or tears, but did reveal fluid and inflammation in his area of injury. Thompson was supposed to run the 4×100 Friday and continue practicing with the football team this spring, and now cannot.

Playing two sports as a collegiate student-athlete is definitely challenging, as Thompson has been balancing track practice and the season with Texas’ spring practices. The former four-star wide receiver recorded just one catch for 32 yards last year in his freshman season, and was looking to make a bigger impact on the track for the Longhorns track team.

Thompson was ranked the No. 101 overall recruit in the 2022 class according to On3’s Industry Rankings, and he did it all at Spearman high school in Texas. On the football field he recorded 2280 rushing yards for 34 touchdowns, 1182 passing yards for 15 touchdowns, 1196 receiving yards for 14 touchdowns during his career.

And on the track he handled his business as well, deciding to stay in high school the spring of his senior year to help his track team instead of enrolling early at Texas. He secured the state 200-meter championship and finished second in the 100 meters in 2021, and could achieve similar success at he collegiate level under accomplished coach Edrick Floréal.

Regarding Thompson’s pursuit of running track along with playing football, head football coach Steve Sarkisian said, ““I think that that’s always challenging when a player plays to sports. It’s not only could become physically taxing if you’ve asked them to do both, it could be mentally taxing. Our thing for Brenen is fast is fast. I feel like him working with Flo and running track this spring is only going to benefit him in the fall from a speed standpoint. His speed is a real factor. We saw a couple glimpses of it last year. We’re hopeful we see more of it in the fall.”

His speed is undeniable, and hopefully for himself and both his respective teams, Thompson can make a return to full health soon.
