Former University of Texas quarterback Vince Young discussed the decision of Texas and Oklahoma to join the SEC on College Football Live. When asked if being successful at Texas would translate to the SEC, Young stated they would make the conference better.

Vince Young on Texas joining SEC

Despite his former school’s plan to join the SEC, Young’s history and rivalry with the conference hasn’t left his mind yet. When asked if he thought he would have the same amount of success in college if he played in the SEC instead of the Big 12, Young made it clear who his pick for top conference was.

“Let’s just be honest… if you look at the Big 12 and SEC record, I think we hold that title right now,” Young said while laughing.

While the head-to-head record could be questioned, Young’s individual performance put him among the best players the SEC offered. In his championship season, Young threw for 3,036 yards, just shy of the SEC’s passing leader Jay Cutler with 3,073.

Young surpassed the SEC quarterbacks in every other metric, however, rushing for more than double the closest SEC quarterback’s production.

Young went on to give a more complete answer and was optimistic about the future of Texas football. The move to join the SEC along with University of Oklahoma by 2025 will be plenty of potential for the programs. And with an expanded playoff that Young believes will happen, more opportunities to play in the national championship game.

“I think it’s going to be good for college football. [The] SEC is a definite competitive conference. And with Texas and OU going over there to make it even stronger, as well as the playoffs going to 12 teams now, I think it’s going to be pretty good.”

Texas still has to win Big 12

Young then stated he believed Texas shouldn’t be focused too far ahead. There are still games to be played in the Big 12 and if Texas wants to cement their legacy in the conference they need to play like they’re the best.

“I’m happy about it, but right now I think Texas football needs to focus on finishing the Big 12 off strong.”

Vince Young was no stranger to representing Texas against anybody, winning the national championship in 2005. He passed for 6,040 yards and 44 touchdowns in his career with the Longhorns, and rushed for another 3,127 yards and 37 touchdowns. He managed these numbers in just three years and in 37 games.
