Timeline updated for Bronny James' recovery, potential debut for USC
The timeline for Bronny James’ recovery has just become a little more clear, according to NBA reporter Dave McMenamin.
“Bronny James is going to get a checkup at the end of the month, according to LeBron James. If he’s cleared, he will practice with the intention to return to game action for USC this season,” McMenamin wrote.
The news comes as USC continues its season opener against Kansas State live on TNT. During the broadcast, sideline reporter Allie LaForce detailed the timeline that Bronny underwent after suffering cardiac arrest in July.
“It wasn’t long ago that Bronny, son of NBA star LeBron James, suffered a cardiac arrest back in July. He underwent successful surgery,” TNT sideline reporter Allie LaForce said during the game’s broadcast. “He’s been doing therapy and rehabilitation daily and he’s been with the team for weeks. He did make the trip to Las Vegas, he was there yesterday at the practices. He’s here today and his family is also here in support of this USC program. His mother Savannah and his brother Bryce are courtside, taking in the action.
“There is no official timetable for his return. We’ve heard the day that he intends to play for USC this year at some point. And of course, guys, there’s the long-term goal of him playing with LeBron before ending his legendary career.”

In late July, James was taken to the hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest during a workout on campus. After the incident, the former McDonald’s All-American arrived at the hospital conscious and stable and was discharged shortly thereafter.
The family’s statement revealed that the condition is treatable, and the goal was to get Bronny back on the court in the “very near future.” He’s ahead of schedule, according to his father’s latest report.
“If he were to walk through the door right now, you wouldn’t even know what he had,” the Los Angeles Lakers star said.
Earlier this offseason in a statement from his consulting cardiologist, Dr. Merije Chukumerije, James was described as being conscious and stable by the time he arrived at the hospital. His care team is hopeful he will be back sooner, rather than later.
“Thanks to the swift and effective response by the USC athletics’ medical staff, Bronny James was successfully treated for a sudden cardiac arrest,” the statement read, via On3’s Nick Kosko. “He arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center fully conscious, neurologically intact and stable. Mr. James was cared for promptly by highly-trained staff and has been discharged home, where he is resting. Although his workup will be ongoing, we are hopeful for his continued progress and are encouraged by his response, resilience, and his family and community support.”
