USC interim coach Donte Williams confirmed that X-rays and MRI results on quarterback Kedon Slovis’ neck both came back negative, per LA Times reporter Ryan Kartje. Williams expects Slovis to practice Monday and he is listed as the starting quarterback on the depth chart.

Slovis was injured on the opening possession of Saturday’s game against Washington State. He did not return as backup quarterback Jaxson Dart passed for 391 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in a 45-14 victory.

Although Slovis is listed as the starter, Williams has alluded to the idea of playing two quarterbacks. It’s possible we still see Dart in action when the Trojans play Oregon State this Saturday.

Slovis threw for 223 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a Week 2 loss to Stanford. USC parted ways with coach Clay Helton following that game.

A third-year starter, Slovis led USC to a Pac-12 Championship appearance this past season. Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner was his quarterback coach in high school.

Dart is a true freshman out of Corner Canyon High School in Kaysville, Utah. He is the No. 6 overall prospect in On3’s class of 2021 rankings. In addition to USC, Dart also held offers from BYU, Iowa State and Arizona State.

Kedon Slovis suffered his injury at perhaps the worst time, as he now could find himself fighting to impress his coach to keep the starting job. With the USC program undergoing monumental changes already this season, could quarterback be the next one?

One of the most prestigious programs in college football history, USC has struggled in recent seasons. The Trojans have just one conference championship in the past 10 seasons and have never made the College Football Playoff.

Dart provided a glimpse at what the future could hold should he take over at quarterback. Perhaps the freshman can be the spark the team needs to find its way back into national relevance.
