Virginia Tech staffer Kyshoen Jarrett, a former Hokies and NFL defensive back, is expected to be hired as Larry Scott’s cornerbacks coach at Howard, a source tells @on3sports via Matt Zenitz.

It was announced by Hokies head coach Justin Fuente last week that he would remain at Virginia Tech as a defensive graduate assistant. The announcement appears to have been premature.

Jarrett spent the 2021 season as Virginia Tech’s assistant director of player personnel. He is a former team captain for the Hokies in 2014 before being a sixth-round selection of Washington in the 2015 NFL Draft.

His NFL career was cut short after one season due to suffering nerve damage in his shoulder, but in 2019 he was hired by Washington as a defensive quality control coach, but let go after the hiring of Ron Rivera, who made changes to the coaching staff upon arrival.

Jarrett led Virginia Tech with 88 tackles (52 solo) and three INTs as a senior in 2014. He saw duty in a total of 53 games in a Tech uniform, finishing his collegiate career with 249 tackles (155 solo), five INTs (48 yards) and 8.5 TFL, as well as 26 punt returns for 324 yards, including a 94-yard TD. He played in all 16 games (six starts) for Washington in 2015, racking up 58 tackles (39 solo) before an injury concluded his playing career, according to his Virginia Tech profile.

The Tannersville, Pennsylvania native got his coaching start leading the defensive backs at Rock Ridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia during the 2016-17 seasons. He then returned to Washington, but Jarrett has most recently worked as the director of athletics at a middle school and high school in Concord, North Carolina. Jarrett graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in human development and family studies along with minors in sociology and communications.

Jarrett joins a Howard program that finished with a disappointing 3-8 record, including a 1-4 record in the MEAC. That record ended them tied for last place with Morgan State. The Bison actually had a winning record at home (3-2), but lost all five of their games on the road and dropped their only neutral site game last season.
