West Virginia defensive back Wesley McCormick exits Baylor game in first quarter with injury

West Virginia defensive back Wesley McCormick was injured in the first quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Baylor Bears. He was trying to tackle a Baylor wide receiver on the play and landed a little awkwardly in the process of bringing them to the ground. McCormick was able to walk off the field on his own power, but appeared to walk into the medical tent to be looked at further by medical staff and trainers.

McCormick is an experienced player for the Mountaineers, playing in his redshirt senior season. He entered the program this year after entering the transfer portal from James Madison. Being a three-year starter for the FCS program, he has made a major jump to Power Five football this season. McCormick was ejected from the Backyard Brawl against Pittsburgh for targeting. Through his first five games this year, he racked up nine tackles and two pass breakups.

Coming out of Northwest High School (Germantown, Maryland), he was named All-Metro honorable mention as a senior. He also participated in the Maryland Crab Bowl–the all-star game for some of the state’s top high school prospects.

Mountaineers quarterback J.T. Daniels has completed six of his six passing attempts. Baylor has gained over 100 yards of offense thus far. West Virginia has gained 93 yards on offense. Mountaineers star running back C.J. Donaldson is not playing in the game. He’s still been recovering from a concussion he suffered against the Texas Longhorns. Running back Tony Mathis, Jr. will have to carry the load in his place on Thursday.

Baylor currently leads Thursday night’s game 17-7 with less than nine minutes remaining in the second quarter. The game is being televised on FS1.
